Overview: Critical Care Elite (Transport) is a semester-long comprehensive curriculum hybrid course designed to prepare clinicians to deliver ICU-level care during ground or air transport. This abridged curriculum covers essential critical care physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and the management of high-acuity medical and trauma patients across the lifespan—from neonates to adults. The course blends focused lectures, Knowledge Checkpoints, and skills components aligned with critical care transport practice.
Eligibility: This course is designed for advanced providers currently working or preparing to work in emergency, critical care, or transport medicine. It is appropriate for Paramedics and qualified hospital-based or ancillary professionals seeking elevated transport competency or preparation for CCP-C/FP-C certification.
The candidate MUST:
Hold an active Paramedic certification or be an approved healthcare professional working in a critical care setting.
Complete required pre-reading and assigned modules prior to course sessions.
Attend 100% of all in-person instructional hours.
Successfully complete Knowledge Checkpoints, quizzes, skills activities, and the final exam.
Have access to a device for LMS materials and basic clinical equipment (stethoscope, trauma shears).

Overview: The Carter Institute’s Critical Care Transport IBSC-Approved Review & Refresher is a fully online, self-paced program designed for practicing emergency and critical care clinicians seeking high-quality recertification education. This comprehensive refresher encompasses all required content and hours for the renewal of NC Paramedic, NRP, FP-C, CCP-C, and CP-C credentials.
Developed by subject matter experts with more than 20 years of instructional experience, this course blends custom-designed modules with interactive, learner-centered activities that bring advanced concepts to life. Participants will review essential principles in emergency and critical care transport, reinforce high-level clinical decision-making, and strengthen their understanding of key topics through rich, experiential-style content.
Hosted on a modern Learning Management System, learners have complete control over when, where, and how they engage with the material. Scholarships may be available for eligible participants.
Eligibility: This course is intended for current providers only. Participants should already be functioning in an emergency, critical care, or transport medicine role and seeking continuing education for certification renewal.
The candidate MUST:
- Hold an active EMS or critical care credential (NC Paramedic, NRP, FP-C, CCP-C, CP-C, or equivalent).
- Be currently practicing or recently active in emergency, transport, or critical care medicine.
- Possess the foundational knowledge required to engage in advanced-level review content.
- Be prepared to complete all online modules and required learning activities within the course timeframe.
- Have access to reliable internet and a device capable of supporting LMS coursework.

Overview: The EMS Safety Academy is a focused training program designed to equip EMS professionals with the knowledge, mindset, and practical skills required to operate safely in today’s complex emergency environments. This course blends evidence-based safety principles with real-world EMS applications, emphasizing situational awareness, risk reduction, crew resource management, patient handling, scene operations, and personal resiliency. Participants will explore the cultural and operational factors that influence safety outcomes and learn strategies to prevent injuries, reduce liability, and strengthen organizational safety practices. Whether new to the field or a seasoned provider seeking refresher-level content, the EMS Safety Academy prepares learners to create and maintain safer environments for themselves, their partners, and their patients.
Eligibility: This course is intended for EMS personnel at all levels—including EMTs, AEMTs, Paramedics, Supervisors, and agency educators—who are committed to enhancing personal and operational safety within their organizations. It is suitable for both field providers and administrative personnel seeking structured guidance on implementing best-practice safety standards.
The candidate MUST:
Hold an active EMS credential or serve in a recognized EMS or public safety role.
Demonstrate a commitment to safe operations and professional responsibility.
Be prepared to participate in scenario discussions, reflective exercises, and practical safety applications.
Have access to a device capable of completing online modules (if applicable).
Complete all required lessons, assessments, and assigned activities to earn course recognition.

Toby Carter, BA, FP-C, CMTE
Toby is a seasoned critical care provider, educator, and medical transport leader with more than two decades of EMS and critical care experience. He has served in progressive frontline, supervisory, and executive roles across air and ground critical care transport, including Director of Cape Fear Valley LifeLINK Air & Specialty Care, where he oversaw a $5M service, nearly 100 staff, and significant system expansion initiatives. Toby’s clinical background spans critical care transport, rapid response medicine, and ICU-level stabilization, and he continues to practice as a Critical Care Paramedic functioning alongside intensivists in a major health system. As an educator, Toby has developed and led EMS degree programs, created interdisciplinary medical simulation events, and built initial and continuing education programs for transport teams. He holds credentials as a Flight Paramedic (FP-C), Certified Medical Transport Executive (CMTE), Nationally Registered Paramedic, and numerous advanced certifications, and is currently pursuing an MBA in Healthcare Administration. His blend of operational leadership, high-acuity clinical expertise, and instructional excellence provides students with a credible, experienced guide through the complexities of critical care transport.
